Devil Fruits are mystical fruits in the One Piece universe that grant incredible abilities to those who consume them, but in return, take away their ability to swim. The Devil Fruits have been the central power system in One Piece for decades, and this remains true as the series continues.
In the Final Saga, it is becoming clear that many secrets of the One Piece world are being unravelled, including recent revelations about the Devil Fruits. However, one particular enigma remains: the origin of the Devil Fruit has still not been clarified.
The Devil’s Fruits of the One Piece world
There are countless powerful Devil’s Fruits in One Piece
The Devil Fruits were first introduced in One Piece at the beginning of the series. Luffy was the character who consumed the first of these fruits shown, the Gomu Gomu no Mi.
The Devil Fruit gave Luffy an elastic body, and with this power, he achieved remarkable feats. Over the years, the Devil Fruit became more and more prominent.
In the East Blue section of history, Devil Fruits were rare and often seen as a myth. However, on the Grand Line, the abilities of the Devil Fruits are almost omnipresent, with each one surpassing the previous one in power. Over the years, fans have been introduced to a variety of unique and special Devil Fruit abilities, some of which are extremely rare.
The Logia types, widely recognised as the most powerful, have been explored in detail, while the Mythical Zoan types, considered the rarest, have also been skilfully portrayed by Oda and integrated into the plot. As the narrative progresses, these Devil Fruits become increasingly complex and extraordinary.
The powerful abilities of the Yonko Devil Fruits have been revealed, as have the impressive Yokai forms of the Five Elders of the World Government. It’s clear that the Devil Fruits will become even more central as One Piece progresses, which is reinforced by the fact that Vegapunk recently shared some of the mythology behind them.
According to Vegapunk, Devil Fruits appear in response to human desires. Every Devil Fruit in existence was desired by someone on a different plane of existence. This explains why Devil’s Fruits often seem to find the person for whom they are most appropriate.
Each Devil Fruit exists because someone wished for that power to come true, which gives context to the power of Luffy’s Sun God, Nika, and the Yami Yami no Mi power of people like Blackbeard. Although this notion makes a lot of sense, it doesn’t clarify how the Devil Fruit comes into existence.
Is there a devil’s fruit tree?
The Devil’s Fruit Tree could be the source of these fruits
The Devil’s Fruits may have come about because someone wanted them, but ultimately they are just fruits. They don’t appear spontaneously; like most fruits, the Devil’s Fruit must grow somewhere. Naturally, anyone’s first guess as to where Devil’s Fruits grow would be a Devil’s Fruit tree.
The concept of a Devil Fruit tree is not so absurd. In fact, Oda has already made reference to a Devil Fruit tree in a parallel story. Although it wasn’t mentioned directly in One Piece, Oda’s Romance Dawn manga clearly features the Devil Fruit tree, suggesting that it could be introduced into the main narrative in the future. At least, fans are aware that this notion was conceived by Oda himself and could emerge in the plot at a later date.
It’s completely logical that the Devil’s Fruit should originate from a Devil’s Fruit Tree and be distributed to different parts of the world. What’s more, the existence of a special tree in the world of One Piece reinforces the theory of Devil Fruit cultivation. Fans are aware that on Fishman Island, the Sunshine Eve Tree is of significant importance.
The Sunshine Eve Tree illuminates Fishman Island and is an extraordinary tree. It accomplishes this feat by breathing, capturing sunlight at the top of the surface and then transferring it to Fishman Island through its roots. In many ways, this tree can be considered the great leader of the Yarukiman Wetlands.
Another mystical tree in the One Piece universe is the Adam Treasure Tree. Although less remembered by many fans, the Adam is notorious for providing the strongest and most durable wood in the entire One Piece world.
The Pirate King’s ship, Oro Jackson, was built with wood from the Adam Treasure Tree. The Thousand Sunny, the ship of the Straw Hat Pirates, was also made from the same wood, which makes this ship unique.
It’s clear that Oda has inserted special trees into his narrative, which suggests the possibility of there being a tree capable of giving life to elements such as Devil Fruits. When an idea is conceived, it could spring from a singular tree. Possibly, those in the Old Kingdom developed this unique method of materialising imagination and longing.
The Devil’s Fruit emerged from desires, yet converting these desires into fruit and making them accessible for human evolution would require something similar to a Devil’s Fruit Tree. Considering that the Ancient Kingdom was extremely advanced, surpassing even Vegapunk, it’s possible that they had the ability to cultivate a vast Devil Fruit Tree and employ its power to produce the various Devil Fruits.
Where could the Devil’s Fruit Tree be?
The question may certainly arise as to the current whereabouts of this prodigious Devil’s Tree. The answer is that the Devil Fruit tree can only be located in one place, above Fishman Island. At the top of the Red Line, possibly inside Marijoa, there must be an immense Devil Fruit tree.
The Devil Fruit tree could extend its roots to the depths of the ocean, specifically reaching Fishman Island, and illuminate the lives of the people who reside there. In other words, the tree that illuminates Fishman Island could also be the source of Devil Fruit, suggesting that the Eve of Sunlight Tree is the same tree that produces Devil Fruit in the world of One Piece.
Although there may be a separate tree for this purpose, the concept of a single tree giving rise to Devil Fruits is not implausible.
